GE14 | Lim Kit Siang recalled how Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, during the 2004 general election, had pledged to eradicate corruption and abuse of power.
The DAP veteran said the former premier, affectionately known as Pak Lah, fashioned himself as a modern-day Justice Bao.
Justice Bao refers to Bao Zheng, who was a government officer in China during the Song dynasty who was renowned for his honesty and uprightness.
Lim made the historical reference in relation to a poem recited by caretaker prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, in which he had praised Abdullah's continued loyalty to Umno and took a swipe at the latter's predecessor Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“Is Najib suggesting that Abdullah has become a loyal and fervent supporter of Najib's dubious accomplishment - making Malaysia a global kleptocracy?
“Let Abdullah say so himself – that he supports Najib in the 1MDB scandal, which has made Malaysia into a global kleptocracy,” added the DAP leader in a media statement.
Lim also cited former minister Zainuddin Maidin's retort to Najib's poem, reminding the latter that if he had not “betrayed” Abdullah, he would not have become prime minister.
“Najib's poetic swipe at Mahathir illustrates that Najib has not learnt the lesson that he may have the world's most expensive strategists and propagandists, but money cannot buy wisdom.
“This is the latest example of Najib continuing to receive bad advice from his highly-paid strategists and propagandists,” he added.
Lim said Najib's latest attack on Mahathir also underlined, what he described as the “great question”, in the coming general election.
“Whether one should remain loyal to persons and political parties even when these persons and political parties have betrayed their founding principles, becoming arrogant and corrupt, or whether one should be loyal to truth, justice and freedom?” he added.
Najib had recited the poem dedicated to Abdullah during the official launch of the National Cancer Institute in Putrajaya yesterday.
The caretaker prime minister has denied abusing public funds for personal gain and blamed the allegations on those conspiring to topple him from power. - Mkini
