GE14 | Caretaker prime minister Najib Abdul Razak has slammed DAP for dropping incumbent Kepong MP Tan Seng Giaw.
Najib claimed Tan had been dropped simply for speaking the truth on 1MDB.
"He spoke the truth and was dropped as a candidate. He had said after the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) looked into the 1MDB issue, that there was nothing to show that the prime minister had committed any wrong. So, he was dropped.
“No one can oppose the wishes of the top leader … where is there democracy in the party?” Najib was quoted as saying by Bernama.
He was speaking at a meet-the-people session in Kuala Kangsar Perak.
Tan, who served as Kepong lawmaker for 36 years, was dropped by the party in favour of incumbent Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng.
Speculation had been rife that the move was due to Tan's remarks as deputy PAC chief on Najib not being directly involved in the 1MDB scandal.
Tan has stuck by his remarks even after being dropped.
BN's official Facebook page had also played up his remarks, sharing a video in which Tan reiterated his original comments.
The 106-page PAC report on 1MDB recommended that the authorities investigate the company's former CEO Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi and other related parties.
Najib, who was the 1MDB advisory board chairperson, said the report concluded that he had not committed any offence.
Critics, however, said the PAC report does not show that Najib did not commit any wrongdoings either. -Mkini
