Who says no need compensation if tunnel scrapped, asks Guan Eng

GE14 | Caretaker chief minister Lim Guan Eng has taken the state BN leadership to task for saying that there is no compensation involved if the undersea tunnel project were to be cancelled if BN recaptures Penang in GE14.
Saying he was puzzled and uncertain about their remarks, Lim described state BN chief Teng Chang Yeow's statement about the matter as "outrageous".
"I am not sure where Teng obtained such information that no compensation is needed to scrap off the undersea tunnel," Lim said at a press conference in Komtar yesterday.
"As far as I know, certain payments need to be made if an agreement or a contract between two parties were inked," he added.
Lim was referring to the state Gerakan chief's remarks that if BN wins Penang, it would cancel the tunnel and its three paired roads project.
Teng said this when unveiling the Penang GE14 manifesto in Seberang Jaya on Sunday.
He also reportedly said the cancellation of the project - which has been criticised by BN leaders as a wastage - involved no compensation.
Teng's (photo) remarks were refuted by Lim yesterday when he accused BN of not having any plans to solve the state's traffic woes, unlike Pakatan Harapan which had proposed a detailed Penang Transport Master Plan.
This plan includes a light rail transit (LRT) system which will benefit all Penangites, he added.
He questioned why BN leaders have persistently criticised the 7.2km tunnel project linking Persiaran Gurney on the island towards Bagan Ajam on the mainland.
BN leaders, especially MCA deputy chief Wee Ka Siong and the coalition's strategic communications deputy chief Eric See-To, had consistently slammed the tunnel project, even describing it as a "scandal".
To this, Lim had always maintained that the RM6.3km project, slated for construction from 2021 to 2027, was above board as it was awarded to the contractor via an open tender system.
He also accused BN of sabotaging the project, and saying that its leaders have no interest in solving the state's traffic problems.
He reiterated that the project will benefit  Penangites who live in the North Seberang Prai zone.
"The solution to traffic is to move the people instead of the vehicle, " said the Bagan MP.
"Does BN have any plan to solve Penang's traffic woes? It must be a proper transport system," Lim said.
"If you do not have such a plan, you are not qualified to rule." - Mkini
