Dr M: Govt to review who’s eligible for BR1M, taskforce to look after minorities

PETALING JAYA: The Government will continue with the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) handouts but will study and relook its recipients, says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The Prime Minister said there were people who received BR1M even though they should not.

“BR1M is not to be regarded as ‘rasuah’ (bribery) or a way of corrupting the people into supporting the Government.

“It should be regarded as a way of mitigating social problems,” he said.

Dr Mahathir also said a special taskforce will be set up to safeguard the interests of the Indian community, women, youth and orang asli.

He added that the aim of the taskforce would be to give attention to the minority groups in Malaysia, with the Indian community being the priority.

“The most important thing is that we have to look into the problems of the Indian community,” Dr Mahathir told a press conference on Thursday after the Pakatan presidential council meeting.

On a separate note, Dr Mahathir said he would ensure that there will be no more weekly fluctuations in fuel prices.

“There will be no fluctuations in fuel prices every week. It is disruptive to businesses, including buyers and sellers.

“If we have to subsidise fuel, we will subsidise,” he added.- Star
