President Donald Trump has caught everyone by surprise when he popped the North Korean peace prospect on the world stage.
There are significant interests within the power structures of the United States who do not want to see a peace between North and South Korea.
Hence there has been strong resistance from within the United States and some hiccups which have almost derailed this peace process.
However there is good news. The peace process with North Korea looks to be on track for that summit between Trump and Kim Jong Un in Singapore this 12th June 2018 - which is 13 days away. A very long time for risky summits like this but I think it will happen.
Here is CNN :
Seoul - North Korean top official traveling to US to meet Sec of State Mike Pompeo
lay groundwork for talks between Kim and Trump in S'pore on June 12
Trump himself confirmed Kim Yong Chol's trip to US early Tues
"We have put a great team together for our talks with North Korea. Meetings are currently taking place concerning Summit, and more. Kim Young Chol, the Vice Chairman of North Korea, heading now to New York. Solid response to my letter, thank you!" - Donald J. Trump
Kim most senior official to visit US since 2000
- talks nearly fell apart last week
- following incendiary comments from North Korea
- called Vice President Mike Pence "political dummy"
conciliatory statement from North Korea revived hopes Sat
Kim Jong Un called impromptu meeting with South Korean President Moon
reiterated his commitment to denuclearizing
There is power going to enemy territory
builds confidence on both sides
shows healthy process two sides working with sincerity
to fundamentally change the relationship
Kim Yong Chol already met Mike Pompeo earlier this month
White House dispatched officials across globe to prepare for summit
team traveled to North Korea Sunday
Reps from Washington, Pyongyang sent to Singapore
President Trump announced meeting was back on
"We're looking at June 12th in Singapore. That hasn't changed."
My comments : It is absolutely critical that this summit between Trump and Kim takes place in Singapore. Beause there may not be another US President in another 100 years who may be agreeable to make peace with North Korea.
How many of you can recall the Formosa Straits?
China's plans to invade Taiwan?
That was the American rhetoric for a long time. The US was pushing the agenda of war between China and Taiwan (the so called invasion of Taiwan). Not only was that fake, it could never happen. It was militarily quite impossible.
But peace has broken out between China and Taiwan. Millions of Chinese and Taiwanese now travel and visit each other. Investments are flowing as well - in both directions.
Not all Americans are happy. Because there is a lesser role for the US in meddling with China - Taiwan relations.
Imagine if peace breaks out between North and South Korea. And it most likely will. There are powerful interests in the US who do not want to see this happen. It will reduce even further the need for American presence in this part of the world.
Here is a prediction : If peace breaks out in Korea, the same vested interests in the US will crank up the South China Sea issue even more. They like to keep things boiling.
Never mind. One step at a time. Let us all hope and work towards a permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.
