It’s about massive corruption, PKR’s Latheefa defends night search at Najib’s home

This comes as Nurul Izzah Anwar says any investigation into Najib Razak should be done according to principles of justice and wisdom.
The heavy police presence continues at Najib Razak’s house today.
PETALING JAYA: A member of PKR’s leadership council has defended the police’s move to raid the private residence of former prime minister Najib Razak last night, after party vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar expressed reservations over a continued police search at his Taman Duta bungalow.
Referring to Nurul’s remarks on Twitter, Latheefa Koya said there was nothing wrong with the police action, which could not be described as an “early dawn raid” because it took place from 9.30pm last night.
“This is pursuant to a major criminal investigation on a massive corruption scandal,” the lawyer told FMT. “It is important that the police act quickly and ensure that evidence is not destroyed.”
Nurul, who is the eldest daughter of PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, had suggested that she empathised with Najib’s situation as her family was also “former victims of early dawn police raids”.
“I must stress my disagreement in ransacking any home at such an ungodly hour. Charge, investigate, prudently. The principles of justice and wisdom always apply,” she said on Twitter.
Amanah’s Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad also said the time of the raid was inappropriate, adding that it should be done during the day.
But Latheefa said it was wrong to compare police action against the opposition under the previous government with the current action against Najib.
“Those were oppressive investigations relating to exercise of freedom of speech and assembly by Pakatan Harapan (PH) and civil society leaders. I am surprised that some PH members don’t understand these distinctions.”
She said if there was any breach of human rights, she would be among the first to condemn the move.
“There isn’t,” she added.
A large police presence continues at Najib’s house today, with police vehicles moving in and out of the area, believed to be carrying confiscated items.
Last night, they took away personal belongings such as handbags, believed to be part of an investigation into allegations of money laundering.
However, Najib’s lawyer, Harpal Singh Grewal, said nothing incriminating had been found. -FMT
