DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang has said that Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik should be given a chance in his role as education minister.
This was amid allegations levelled against the Bersatu leader, including a video clip denigrating minorities which was falsely attributed to him.
"Since yesterday, a video clip of a 'fanatic' had been circulated on social media with the suggestion that recipients should forward it to as many as possible so as 'to reach Tun (Mahathir) before he became the education minister'.
"The 'he' was meant to be Maszlee, the education minister-designate, except that the person in the video clip was not Maszlee at all.
"There have been criticisms of Mazslee as the education minister, but let us give the 44-year-old academician the chance to prove his suitability for the important post of education minister of a New Malaysia," Lim said in a statement today.
Critics have accused Maszlee of supporting Zakir Naik.
Maszlee, in a joint op-ed in 2016, had addressed the issue of the preacher's controversial teachings.
A petition has also been started calling for Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to take on the role of education minister as initially planned.
Mahathir had previously wanted to take up the portfolio himself, but later decided to let it go as it would contravene Pakatan Harapan's manifesto.
In his statement today, Lim urged netizens to check the veracity of the information they receive on social media.
"We are in the information age, but we should be aware of its promises and perils.
"As netizens of the information era, we must develop new disciplines, one of which is to check the veracity of the messages and video clips before circulating them on social media," he said. -Mkini
