KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has not left his home in Taman Duta here that was raided earlier by a special police team investigating the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.
Najib returned home after performing terawih prayers at the Kg Baru Mosque at 9.50pm ahead of the first day of Ramadan, just before the police team arrived, and has not been spotted leaving.
It is unclear if his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, is also at home and she was not seen either entering or leaving the property.
Najib’s press secretary Datuk Seri Tengku Sariffuddin Tengku Ahmad and lawyer, Hasnal Rezua Merican, were seen entering the compound of the former PM’s residence just after 11pm.
The former PM’s home is nestled in a corner Jalan Langgak Duta, off Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim, and is surrounded by several other mansions and shrubbery on a hillside in the exclusive residential neighbourhood.
There is only a single access point to Najib’s house as the street is a cul-de-sac.

The team arrived earlier in more than 10 police vehicles, while others conducted simultaneous raids elsewhere, including two units at the exclusive Pavilion Residences condominium linked to Najib’s family.
Federal Commercial Crimes Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Seri Amar Singh, who met with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad before this, is leading the raid.
Police also deployed more manpower to the scene as media personnel and onlookers began gathering near a makeshift police post by the intersection leading to Najib’s residence, with the crowd swelling into the hundreds as of 1am.
Onlookers at the scene also took out their mobile phones to photograph and record videos of the house from afar after authorities barricaded the street with police tape to keep the crowd at bay.
Dr Mahathir ordered renewed investigations into 1MDB shortly after taking office and said he expects to be able to charge Najib soon.
The Auditor-General also declassified the report of her predecessor’s audit of 1MDB on Tuesday, giving Malaysians a glimpse of the irregularities involving the firm’s previous management.

This is uncalled for! Source close to Najib slams police action

The police’s marathon search of former premier Najib Abdul Razak’s residence along Jalan Langgak Duta in Kuala Lumpur has raised the ire of those close to him.
A source told Malaysiakini that conducting such an operation on the first day of Ramadhan was unwarranted.
He also shared a photograph of Najib falling asleep on the sofa as police officers from the federal commercial crimes department combed his house.
He pointed out that as a former premier, the latter should be accorded due respect regardless of the circumstances.
“This is uncalled for. Why couldn’t they conduct the search earlier? He has to prepare for Sahur (pre-fasting meal) soon,” he added.
The source also criticised Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad over the operation, which came exactly a week after Pakatan Harapan won the 14th general election.
“Looks like Mahathir’s revenge has won. I hope he is happy wherever he is sleeping,” he added.
Earlier, Kuala Lumpur police chief Amar Singh Ishar Singh confirmed that police were searching the residence but declined to elaborate.
He was also quoted as saying that similar operations were being carried out at five locations, including the Pavillion Residence in Kuala Lumpur and the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya.
It is believed that the operation is related to the 1MDB scandal.
At about 10.30pm, more than a dozen police cars and a Black Maria truck often used to transport detainees, pulled up outside the former premier’s house.
This sparked off speculation that Najib might be arrested.
Yesterday, Mahathir said his predecessor could be charged soon and dismissed the possibility of striking a deal with Najib.
The prime minister also claimed that former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail had told him that he was planning to charge Najib when he was removed from his position.
Abdul Gani was heading a task force comprising the former police chief and heads of Bank Negara and MACC to investigate the RM2.6 billion in Najib’s accounts and the SRC International issue. – MKINI
