Ramkarpal: Find out who wanted Altantuya dead

Incoming federal government must show 'strong political will' to uncover the murder or risk being labelled as no different from Barisan Nasional, says Ramkarpal Singh.
Ramkarpal Singh of DAP says government must get to the bottom of the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu, who was linked to the Navy’s purchase of two Scorpene submarines.
PETALING JAYA: A Royal Commission of Inquiry should be held to determine who ordered the murder of Mongolian woman Altantuya Shaariibuu in 2009, a DAP politician said today.
Ramkarpal Singh, who won election last week as MP for Bukit Gelugor, urged the prime minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, to convene the royal inquiry, whose findings could form the basis of a subsequent charge against those culpable.
“The new PH government must demonstrate strong political will to get to the bottom of the murder of Altantuya or risk being labelled as no different from its predecessor,” he said in a statement.
Two former police officers were found guilty and sentenced to death for killing Altantuya in a forest near a Subang dam in Shah Alam. One of them, Sirul Azhar Umar, fled to Australia, where he is being held at an immigration detention centre while he seeks political asylum.
His former colleague, Azilah Hadri, is imprisoned in Kajang and being held on death row.
Ramkarpal said it was “shocking” that evidence was not presented during their trial to show who had ordered them to murder Altantuya “particularly when it was clear that they did not even know her and certainly had no reason to do so on their own”.
He said it was curious that the prosecution did not file an appeal when a third accused, Abdul Razak Baginda, was acquitted without his defence being called.
Razak Baginda, a policy analyst with links to former prime minister Najib Razak, was alleged to have had an affair with Altantuya and also alleged to have been involved in corruption kickbacks of hundreds of millions of ringgit in the government’s purchase of two French-built Scorpene submarines for the navy.
Ramkarpal said anyone who instructed Azilah and Sirul to carry out the killing must be charged as well, for having shared a common intention to murder her.
“I have said before that the world must know who ordered the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu and the reason or reasons behind such order,” Ramkarpal said. -FMT
