A viral WhatsApp message urging the public to protest against the appointment of Tommy Thomas as the attorney-general this morning resulted in only four people turning up.
The message had urged the public to gather at 8am, but in the end, there were only four "protesters" that showed up.
According to StarOnline, the quartet were from a group known as Pertubuhan Biru Ber "1" Abata Malaysia.
However, their leader Zahlan Ridzuan said they "agreed" with the royal consent given to Thomas' appointment.
"We have to agree because we do not want to be labelled as 'derhaka' (rebellious)," he was quoted as saying.
Nonetheless, Zahlan said his group believed that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong was "pressured" into consenting to the appointment.
He also criticised Pakatan Harapan for making irresponsible statements which were jeopardising the country's economy.
Yesterday, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had conferred with the Council of Rulers on Putrajaya's pick for attorney-general.
A statement was issued by the Comptroller of the Royal Household Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz at about 3am this morning, confirming Thomas' appointment to the post.
Previously, there were heated debates on whether Thomas - a non-Muslim - could adequately fulfil his role as an attorney-general because the palace may need to refer to him on syariah matters.
Others said this argument was invalid because the Federal Constitution does not stipulate this role for the attorney-general. -Mkini
