ALOR SETAR: PPBM deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir today welcomed the appointment of Tommy Thomas as the new attorney-general, replacing Mohamed Apandi Ali, who was sacked.
Mukhriz expressed confidence that Thomas was the right choice for AG, expressing confidence that the move would help the Pakatan Harapan-led federal government in its probe and legal action on all cases of alleged wrongdoing which occurred during the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration.
“This is specifically in reference to the 1MDB case. As we all know, former prime minister and Pekan MP Najib Razak has engaged the services of former US AG John Ashcroft.
“He is ready to face legal action by getting the services of this prominent person from the US, who is also known to be a good litigation lawyer.
“On the federal government’s side, there needs to be an AG who is efficient, serious and with an excellent reputation, such as Tommy Thomas.
“I believe he will be able to deliver as the AG,” he told reporters after the “Jom Adik Shopping Raya” programme at Mydin Mall, Alor Mengkudu, here, today.
It was previously reported that Ashcroft Law Firm, headed by Ashcroft, had registered Najib as a client on the United States Foreign Agents Registration Act (Fara) register.
Fara requires agents representing the interests of foreign powers to disclose their relationship with the foreign government and provide information about related activities and finances.
This morning, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V had given his consent to the appointment of Thomas as the new AG.
Comptroller of the Royal Household Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz said the Agong, on the advice of Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, gave his consent to the appointment according to Article 145 (1) of the Federal Constitution.
The King also consented to the sacking of Apandi, who had been on unrecorded leave since May 15. -FMT
