Untainted by scandals, support pours in for 'clean' Ku Li to revive Umno

Over the weekend, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah revealed that he was still deliberating on whether to contest for the Umno president's post in the June 23 party polls.
Since then, various quarters have expressed their support for the 81-year-old veteran leader.
As far as his Gua Musang Umno division is concerned, there is no better candidate to help pick up the pieces following BN's defeat in the 14th general election.
A division representative Mahamad Napi Nasir pointed out that the Gua Musang MP, who is also known as Ku Li, is perceived as a clean leader and this can boost the morale of Umno members.
"Besides uniting the Malays, he will be able to address the 1MDB scandal as he was not involved in the crisis,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.
Echoing a similar view, division committee member Wan Zawawi Wan Zain said Tengku Razaleigh can fill the leadership vacuum in Umno.
"The entire Umno leadership is looking around for a president. In the meantime, many want him to fill the vacuum.
"The division committee, especially the Youth leadership, has endorsed him for the post," he added.
Paloh state assemblyperson Amran Ariffin said Umno needed a prominent leader like Tengku Razaleigh to spearhead the party's recovery as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, Galas assemblyperson Mohd Syahbuddin Hashim noted that Tengku Razaleigh was never embroiled in controversies and does not possess a bad track record.
"He is a leader with credibility. We will once again enjoy the support and confidence of the members (with Tengku Razaleigh as president)," he added.
In 1987, Tengku Razaleigh had mounted a challenge against then Umno president Dr Mahathir Mohamad. The latter won with a razor-thin majority of 43 votes.
Ironically, Mahathir, 92, had led Pakatan Harapan to oust BN and Umno from power in the May 9 national polls.
At present, Umno deputy president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is carrying out the functions of the top post following former premier Najib Abdul Razak's resignation. -Mkini
