Chong Wei seeks treatment in Taiwan for breathing problems

Reports say the badminton ace has breathing problems which may end his career, but Lee says he is determined to get back to court.
Badminton ace Lee Chong Wei is determined to overcome an illness which may end his career.
PETALING JAYA: Badminton ace Lee Chong Wei is undergoing treatment in Taiwan for a threatening disease that could prematurely end his illustrious career according to news reports.
Quoting a source, the New Straits Times (NST) reported that the three-time Olympic silver medallist was currently in Taiwan for medical treatment.
According to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), Chong Wei was facing breathing problems and would have to skip any form of physical activities.
“This is very sad news when our badminton hero, who has contributed so much to the country, is suddenly facing health problems.
“Everybody knows that he is a model athlete who always takes good care of his health and fitness,” the source was quoted by the English daily as saying.
Meanwhile, The Star reported that the 35-year-old, who withdrew from the World Championships in Nanjing, China and the Asian Games in Indonesia, is determined to battle the disease and return to court.
The daily also quoted BAM president Norza Zakaria as saying they had given Chong Wei – who suspected something was amiss after winning the Malaysian Open title early this month – the space to make all arrangements for his treatment.
“He needs the best treatment for his respiratory related disorder and we will wait for the next few weeks before giving more updates on Chong Wei. For now, we just want him to focus on his recovery and get well,” he was quoted as saying.
It is learnt he will be in Taiwan for two months.
Chong Wei has won 69 titles on the international stage, winning three Olympic silver medals in 2008, 2012 and 2016.
He also emerged as the runner-up in the World Championships thrice as well in 2011, 2013 and 2015. --FMT
