After being criticised, Education Minister Maszlee Malik has now promised to provide an allocation to Chinese independent high schools (SPMC) under the federal development budget, Chinese dailies reported today.

The newspapers quoted a statement from Maszlee referring to the written parliamentary reply to MCA’s Ayer Hitam MP Wee Ka Siong, who asked questions on the mechanism in covering the operation and development expenses of SPMC.

Maszlee clarified that SPMC could not receive allocations to pay for teachers’ salary as they are not government schools.

“Operation allocation covers the government’s internal expenses. Most of the allocations are for civil servants and teachers’ emolument.

“As SPMC is not a public school or under the ministry’s purview, and its teachers are not civil servants, the ministry cannot use operation allocation for SPMC, private religious schools and other private education agencies.”

Maszlee said Pakatan Harapan government will “undoubtedly” support SPMC.

This was evident in Penang, Selangor, Malacca and Johor where the Harapan state governments did provide financial allocations to SPMC based on its ability.

On allocation under the federal level, Maszlee said: “Harapan government’s allocation to SPMC will be incorporated into the national finance holistic plan in the form of ‘development expenses’.

“Based on the government’s overall economic performance, we will discuss with the Finance Ministry to decide on the needs and forms of allocation.”

Maszlee’s statement was also carried by Sinchew Daily, Oriental Daily, Kwong Wah Jit Poh, Guang Ming Daily and The Malaysian Insight (Chinese version).

Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching also shared the Oriental Daily and Sinchew‘s version of Maszlee’s statement on her Facebook page.

However, Malaysiakini‘s check found that none of the Malay and English language media carried the statement at a time of writing.

Malaysiakini contacted Maszlee’s office to verify the authenticity of the statement but the office told the news portal to wait for the reply.

Earlier today, Maszlee Malik came under fire from two DAP elected representatives, including Youth chief Wong Kah Woh, for not providing allocations to SMPC.

Wong claimed that the stand was similar to the old BN mindset.

This came after Maszlee, in a parliamentary written reply to Wee, said that since SPMC schools do not come under the national education system, there would be no funding for them. – MKINI

Don’t entertain calls to fund SPMC, Bersatu Youth tells minister

Bersatu Youth’s education bureau has called upon Education Minister Maszlee Malik to ignore calls to provide an allocation to Chinese independent high schools (SPMC) under the federal development budget.

Its head Mohd Ashraf Mustaqim Badrul Munir (above), in a statement today, said this was because doing so was not listed as part of Pakatan Harapan’s agenda.

“SPMC does not come under any category of educational institution of the national education system.

“In fact, in Harapan’s manifesto, there is nothing that mentions about financial aid to SMPC or an agenda to strengthen them,” he said.

Ashraf’s statement comes amid reports in Chinese newspapers that Maszlee had promised to provide allocations to SPMC in the form of “development expenses”.

The education minister had earlier come under fire from two DAP elected representatives – Ipoh Timur MP Wong Kah Woh, and Bercham assemblyperson Ong Boon Piow – for not providing allocations to the SMPC.

Ashraf said while Bersatu Youth was all for diversity in the education system and helping out the non-bumiputera, it also believed that help should only be extended to government-run vernacular schools.

“We would like to ask the two representatives and other Harapan lawmakers as well – have they not read Promise No 5 in the Harapan manifesto that says: Building an inclusive, moderate and excellent Malaysia on the global stage?

“If Harapan lawmakers observe this, it is clear that the education minister does not have to even begin to entertain the calls that are being put forward,” he said.

On the same note, the Education Ministry should also relook and reconsider the plan to implement the United Examination Certificate (UEC) because it “clearly goes against the National Education Policy and Harapan’s intention to create an integrated society, he added. – MKINI
