Sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional was formerly meant to enrich the country, not just the bumiputera, said former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
"Khazanah was never set up with the intention of (enriching only) bumiputera. That was never the raison d'etre (reason for existence).
"Khazanah was envisioned as an institution to create wealth for the country. Once the wealth was created, it was to benefit the country," Najib told reported when met in the Parliament lobby today.
This contrasts with remarks by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad earlier this month, who said Khazanah had deviated from its original objective of helping the bumiputera.
Najib said he was concerned about the future of corporate Malaysia.
He also said that Khazanah, like its Singapore counterpart Temasek Holdings, was meant to create talent.
Najib said this when asked to comment about the entire Khazanah board offering to resign from their post.
Among those who offered to resign was Najib's brother, Nazir. -Mkini
