Fellow PPBM member comes under fire at rally attended by mostly PAS and Umno supporters.
PETALING JAYA: Education Minister Maszlee Malik, a PPBM member, came under fire from fellow PPBM member and former minister Rais Yatim at a rally today attended mostly by PAS and Umno members.
Rais attacked the plans by Pakatan Harapan for recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) of independent Chinese schools as a qualification for entry into public universities.
Maszlee has said the ministry was conducting a study into the matter.
Rais made an appearance at the Himpunan Kebangkitan Ummah rally at Sultan Sulaiman Club in Kuala Lumpur, attended by about 3,000 people. Among them was Lokman Adam, the Barisan Nasional candidate in the Sungai Kandis by-election in Selangor on Aug 4, and PAS officials.
“Dong Jiao Zong (the Chinese education movement) wants our government to recognise UEC, but has our minister considered looking into Sections 15, 16 and 13 of (the Education Act) and whether or not UEC is aligned to it? He must answer this question!” Rais said, according to Malay Mail Online.
“It is not the government that must be with Dong Jiao Zong but it is Dong Jiao Zong that must be with the government and the ministry,” said Rais, who is known as a proponent of greater usage of the national language.
He urged Maszlee to show no fear in dealing with the pressure for recognition. “At the Sultan Sulaiman Club this morning, our people are ready to state what must be done,” he said.
Malaysia did not need multiple examination systems or more than one certification system, Rais said. -FMT
