Suhakam to probe sexual predator schoolteacher

The Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) has pledged to investigate an Ampang primary school pupil’s allegations of sexual assault by her teacher.
The issue was made known after the pupil told her parents about the teacher’s inappropriate behaviour towards her.
Human rights watchdog Suaram project coordinator Mohammad Alshatri said: “The teacher had previously been reported for sexually assaulting students in another school before being moved to SRK Taman Nirwana.
“The District Education Office, State Education Director and the Ministry of Education previously did not have any special mechanics to process complaints and handle sexual assault cases in schools.
“This allowed the teacher to repeat the same actions with other students,” he said when presenting the memorandum to Suhakam today.
Receiving the memorandum, Suhakam commissioner Lok Yim Pheng urged schools nationwide to take cases of sexual assault seriously.
“These are kids… We need to protect the rights of children who want to go to school to learn. (We can’t have them) go there and not have their safety ensured.
“It is the responsibility of teachers to ensure the safety of children in class… but in this case, it seems that the parents are not satisfied because of the (uncooperative) attitude and measures by which the school’s administration has dealt with this case.
“So, in the view of Suhakam, the school administration needs to deal with this in a more professional manner,” she said, adding that schools must not cover up reports like this and that Suhakam will begin investigations into the matter.

Whistleblower claims police is spying on him
In an unrelated development, Suaram, representing Mywatch chairperson Sanjeevan Ramakrishnan, handed over a separate memorandum to Suhakam regarding alleged espionage on Sanjeevan by the Royal Malaysian Police.
Sanjeevan told Suhakam commissioner Lok that he had approached two men parked in a blue Toyota Wish outside his house after he noticed that they had been following him for two consecutive days.
The whistleblower said that the two men told him and the security guard in his housing area that they were narcotics officers. However, he claims that his sources told him the men are not who they claim to be.
“I’ve been attacked, accused and shot. I’ve managed to survive ... but what they’re trying to do (now) is beyond the limit.
“He shot me, I didn’t die. He charged me, he couldn’t send me to prison. So, are you trying to abduct me now? I want the IGP to answer to this.”
Sanjeevan has been arrested multiple times in the past over extortion and defamation charges, as well as for allegedly falsifying documents, cheating, and offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001.

The whistleblower also appeared in the news in 2013 after surviving a gunshot by unknown assailants.
Previously, Sanjeevan had been vocal about corruption in the police force as well as what he called their bullying tactics towards him for being a whistleblower. -Mkini
