KR1M outlets to know fate soon

KUALA LUMPUR: The fate of 1Malaysia retail outlets (KR1M 2.0) will be announced soon, says Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Deputy Minister Chong Chieng Jen.
"Our ministry has made a decision after reviewing it.
"The Minister (Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail) will make the announcement soon, whether it will continue or not," Chong told reporters after launching the partnership between Touch n' Go e-wallet and KK Super Mart.
"There will be a press conference on that soon," he said.
Saifuddin had earlier indicated that KR1M 2.0 would be retained but rebranded.
In an interview with news portal Malaysiakini, Ameer Ali Mydin, the managing director of hypermarket chain Mydin, described the KR1M 2.0 initiative as "a joke" and said it was better if the Government ditched it.
Mydin managed the first KR1M project, which suffered more than RM100mil in losses due to the logistical cost of supplying subsidised goods to remote areas.
On a separate matter, Chong said the impact of the Sales and Services Tax (SST), which is expected to start in September, would not be as significant compared to the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
"The items taxed under SST is not as broad-based as GST. It is a single-layered taxation too," he said.
"The Ministry has many programmes to ensure the cost of living is better managed," he added.- Star
