Lim Kit Siang's daughter and Penang DAP secretary Hui Ying (right) was appointed senator for a three-year term on Aug 10.
KUALA LUMPUR: MIC Youth chief Datuk Sivarraajh Chandran has criticised the appointment of Penang DAP secretary Lim Hui Ying as a senator in the Dewan Negara.
Hui Ying is the daughter of DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang.
"There is this worry that a move to appoint a family member to an important post will cultivate the practice of nepotism among politicians," the Cameron Highlands MP said in a statement issued to the media in Parliament on Wednesday (Aug 15).
He said such an appointment could result in a conflict of interest in the decision-making process at the expense of the people.
"Before the recent general election, it was said that a senior DAP senior member rejected Hui Ying as a candidate for the Tanjong parliamentary seat for fear of the perception of nepotism by the party.
"Are they (DAP members) now keeping silent over the appointment of the DAP advisor's daughter as a senator?" he questioned.
Sivarraajh pointed out that the appointment of Hui Ying was seen as the expansion of the "Lim dynasty".
He called for an immediate stop to the appointment of family members of senior government ministers to decision-making posts.
On Aug 13, senior Umno MP Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob also criticised Hui Ying's appointment.
The Bera MP and former minister said Hui Ying's appointment was nothing short of nepotism.
Hui Ying and former PKR Balik Pulau MP Yusmadi Yusoff were on Aug 10 appointed by the state as senators for a three-year term.- Star
