Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali has claimed that his statement on the nation needing leaders who are willing to fight till the end instead of “crybabies” was aimed at himself.
This was on the speculation that the PKR deputy president’s Twitter posting was in response to Nurul Izzah Anwar’s interview with the Singapore’s Straits Times, in which she had complained about the slow pace of reforms.
"No… I was giving myself advice,” Azmin told reporters while visiting a temporary relief shelter for flood and storm victims in Gombak, Selangor.
Asked if he had any advice for Nurul, he replied: “Who am I to advise (her).”
The minister also refused to be drawn into a mud-slinging match with Nurul’s father and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim over the latter’s remark that some leaders seek to protect ideals and principles while there are those who want to protect their positions at all cost.
“He (Anwar) did not mention me (as the person wanting to protect his post)… Don’t accuse him (of doing so). He never mentioned (my name),” said Azmin.
This is despite Anwar making the remark when commenting on Azmin’s “crybabies” tweet. The PKR president had also advised his number two to “cool down“.
In her interview with Straits Times, Nurul, who is the MP for Permatang Pauh, said this would be her last term as a federal lawmaker.
Apart from this, she had described Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad as a former dictator when speaking about how difficult it was to work with him again.
She said Mahathir had inflicted much damage on her family and the system in referrence to his fallout with Anwar during his first tenure as prime minister.
Soon after Azmin tweeted, PKR lawmaker Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad responded: “When a lady makes a stand, call her a crybaby? Cheap, very cheap.”
Yesterday, former PKR Youth deputy chief Dr Afif Bahardin urged Anwar and Azmin to rebuild their trust for each other to ensure the party remained strong.
