Veteran DAP politician Lim Kit Siang is “prepared to bet” his future political career against that of Umno acting president Mohamad Hasan.
The politician, who was first elected to parliament 50 years ago this week, is betting that Dr Mahathir Mohamad will honour his word to hand over the premiership to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
Failing this, the 78-year-old lawmaker said, he will drop out of GE15 and out of politics altogether.
Lim had taken issue with the assertion made by Mohamad during a ceramah on Wednesday that Mahathir would rather dissolve Parliament and call for fresh elections than relinquish the reins for the PKR president after two years in office.
“I have more confidence in Mahathir and I am prepared to have a wager with Mohamad that Mahathir will honour the Harapan commitment to pass the prime minister’s post to Anwar.
“If Mahathir does not pass the post to Anwar and instead dissolves Parliament to call for an early 15th general election (GE15), I will retire from politics and will not contest in the GE15.
“If Mahathir keeps to his word and passes the post to Anwar, then Mohamad must withdraw from politics and must not contest in the GE15,” Lim said.
The Iskandar Puteri MP also countered that the opposition was merely hoping that the ruling Pakatan Harapan coalition “would crumble” after just a few months in government.
“Now they (the opposition) are hoping that Harapan will crumble and disintegrate with Mahathir refusing to pass the prime minister’s post to Anwar,” he said, according to a copy of his speech in Sandakan last night on the first-year anniversary of the Harapan rule following GE14.
Lim gave Mohamad two days to accept the challenge.
Mohamad is in Sabah campaigning for PBS in the lead-up to tomorrow’s Sandakan parliamentary by-election.
