Asean must step up efforts to protect children from paedophiles

Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has called on Asean countries to share the information they have on paedophiles.
This, she said, will be in line with efforts to protect children from cybercrimes.
"I would like to propose Asean countries to share information on convicted paedophiles and those who commit sex crimes against children to better protect our children from online sexual abuse and exploitation.
"This information can then be used by the authorities as a precautionary measure to keep an eye on individuals who might have served their time and are now travelling beyond their borders," Wan Azizah said when opening the Cyber Defence Conference 2019 in Kuala Lumpur today.
She said such information sharing could help prevent serial sex offenders from reaching Malaysia, while also aiding in the building of security "walls" against them and other cybercriminals.
Wan Azizah said Putrajaya viewed the matter of cybersecurity seriously and is in the midst of formulating a more contemporary Malaysia Cyber Security Strategy (MCSS).
The MCSS is a five-year strategy that seeks to cover all national cybersecurity concerns, including on governance, legislation and enforcement, innovation, industry development, technology security and research & development (R&D).
It will also encourage stronger international engagement and cooperation.
This includes the formulation of cybersecurity legislation to further strengthen enforcement against cybercrimes.
The MCSS is slated to be launched next month. - Mkini
