I was unaware Najib was SRC adviser, ex-govt secretary tells court

Former deputy chief secretary (Cabinet) Mazidah Abdul Majid (in pink tudung).
KUALA LUMPUR: A former government secretary told the High Court that the secretariat under the Prime Minister’s Office was not aware that Najib Razak was SRC International Sdn Bhd’s adviser.
Responding to a question by Najib’s lawyer, Shafee Abdullah, on the former prime minister’s “conflicted” positions in the administration and SRC International, former deputy chief secretary (Cabinet) Mazidah Abdul Majid said the issue of Najib wearing different hats was not bought to the attention of the secretariat.
When Shafee pointed out that Najib was SRC International’s adviser emeritus and finance minister, Mazidah said she did not know Najib was also adviser to SRC International until the memorandum of government guarantee for loans was tabled in 2011.
Mazidah said she could not speak on behalf of then chief secretary Sidek Hassan as to whether he was aware of Najib’s positions.
She said based on the Cabinet meeting minutes, none of the ministers had asked Najib to leave the room when the Cabinet was discussing the issue of offering government guarantees to SRC International for the RM2 billion loan.
She said the Cabinet decided that the government give guarantees to the loan at the Feb 8, 2012 meeting.
Mazidah said another meeting was held on Nov 6, 2015, where the Cabinet agreed that the government gave RM100 million to SRC International as a short term loan.
Najib, 66, is facing three counts of criminal breach of trust, one charge of abusing his position and three counts of money laundering over SRC International funds amounting to RM42 million.
He is also accused of abusing his power as prime minister by giving government guarantees on SRC International’s RM4 billion loan from Retirement Fund Inc.
The Pekan MP was charged with committing the offences at AmIslamic Bank Bhd on Jalan Raja Chulan and the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya between Aug 17, 2011, and Feb 10, 2015.
