KUALA LUMPUR: A food stall operator pleaded guilty to eight charges of insulting Prophet Muhammad at the Sessions Court here today.
Chow Mun Fai previously denied the charges when taken to court for the first time on March 8.
Today, he changed his plea to “guilty” to all charges against him under Section 298A (1) of Penal Code and Section 233 (1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act.
Judge Edwin Paramjothy set July 3 for hearing on sentencing.
Chow was said to have made the remarks on his Twitter account, @alvinchow333, between Feb 13 and March 2.
The remarks were later read by police officers from Bukit Aman’s Commercial Crime Department.
Chow was arrested by the police at Pudu Plaza Shopping Centre on March 6. His handphone and SIM card were also seized.
He was taken to court and charged on March 8 with two other individuals, Yazid Kong Abdullah and Danny Antoni, with insulting Islam.
Yazid was jailed for seven months and fined RM10,000 by another Sessions Court after pleading guilty to one charge under Section 233 (1)(a).
Danny also pleaded guilty to two charges of insulting Islam and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang. The court set July 17 for his sentencing.
Deputy public prosecutor Muhamad Asyraf Md Kamal earlier told the court that Chow‘s Twitter posts were planned in advance as they were made three times on March 2 and once on Feb 13.
“His action could cause disharmony on grounds of religion among the people in the country,” he said, adding that the words Chow used on his Twitter account were harsh and provocative.
However, Chow’s lawyer Rajsurian Pillai urged the court to impose only the minimum jail term of two years, saying Chow had taken responsibility for his remarks. - FMT
