Conmen impersonating Education Ministry officers to extort money, says Dr Maszlee

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry has received complaints that certain individuals were impersonating as officials from the ministry in a purported scam, says Dr Maszlee Malik (pic).
The Education Minister said these individuals had impersonated officers from his ministry to cheat contractors of their monies in promise of being awarded government contracts.
“I want to stress here that neither me nor the education ministry had any officers who were ordered to collect money from contractors.
“If there is anyone who claims that they are my political secretary or officers and asks for money, please report to the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)," he said.
Dr Maszlee also urged the public to take pictures of these unscrupulous individuals and forward them to the Education Ministry.
“I will never appoint any political secretaries to collect monies from contractors. This is a form of corruption and power abuse, which we are strongly against,” he added.
According to Dr Maszlee, the incidents had taken place in several states such as Johor, Sabah, Kedah and Perak.
“Whoever has proof, report to the police and the MACC and forward the report to the Education Ministry,” he added.
Meanwhile, Dr Maszlee denied that the Education Ministry had organised the Perak Muda Medalist Dancesport Championship, which courted flak for its participants wearing revealing dresses last weekend.
"The ministry has never organised or was involved in any half-naked dance events such as that and we have never sponsored it as well.
"We will take stern action against those who abuse the ministry's logo in its activities which goes against the ministry's vision," he added.
Dr Maszlee also thanked the public for highlighting the matter on social media.
"It helped us to identify the groups who abused our logo for their vested interests," he said at Parliament lobby on Monday (July 1).
The organiser of the event, JJ & Alice Danceworld, had formally apologised to the Education Ministry for misusing the ministry's logo as stage decoration on Monday (July 1). - Star
