Dewan Rakyat introduces scheduling to help with ministers' attendance

Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Nga Kor Ming today said the House has introduced scheduling for ministries to help with the attendance of cabinet members.
Nga said this is by designating certain days for certain ministries in the Dewan Rakyat, so that representatives need not be present throughout the entire session and can focus on their government duties.
"If you notice, we have implemented another parliamentary reform this morning... Today, we limited it to seven to eight ministries.
"When it is fully implemented, we don't need all ministers to attend the Parliament sitting," he told journalists at the Parliament lobby.
"He or she will only need to attend the sitting on specific days... For example, if Monday is for the Finance Ministry, then (Finance Minister) Lim Guan Eng must come.
"But he won't need to do so for other days. He can focus on his ministerial work and serve the rakyat."
According to the new scheduling system, each day is limited to between eight to nine ministries.
"This is an improvement to time management and part of parliamentary reforms," he added.
Nga also stressed that this schedule is specifically for ministries to respond to questions raised in the Dewan Rakyat.
However, he said attendance is still expected for crucial votes, such as voting on amendments to the Federal Constitution which require a two-thirds majority. -Mkini
