Court warns against further mobile phone disruptions in Najib trial

KUALA LUMPUR: Legal action could be taken against those who disrupt the proceedings through sounds emanating from their mobile phones, the High Court warned during the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) trial of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
The court issued the warning on Wednesday (Oct 9) after a particularly loud musical ringtone went off.
This sound disrupted lead defence lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah’s cross-examination of prosecution witness Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi, the former 1MDB CEO.
Responding to the interruption, lead prosecutor Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram said in England’s courts, contempt proceedings would be initiated against such an offender.
The court then gave official notice that should anyone’s handphone ring or disrupt future proceedings, it would confiscate the device and take action against the owner.
It did not elaborate what action would be taken, although such a behaviour can be punished under the offence of contempt of court.
The court police then issued a warning to the woman whose handphone went off. The officers did not confiscate her pnoe, however.
The woman was seated on the bench allocated for the family members of Najib.
The hearing continues before High Court judge Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah tomorrow.- Star
