Debate transport plan also, says Penang MTUC

Penang MTUC secretary K Veeriah.
PETALING JAYA: The Penang division of the Malaysian Trades Union Congress today suggested that a proposed debate between Penang Forum and the state government should include the state’s transport master plan.
Earlier today, Penang Forum had proposed a public debate with the state government over a proposed Bayan Lepas LRT project in response to Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow’s accusations that the group made baseless allegations about his administration.
Penang MTUC secretary K Veeriah said that the debate would serve as an appropriate platform for the people of Penang to “appreciate the contentious issue”.
However he said, the debate should also focus on the Penang Transport Master Plan, which includes the Penang South Reclamation Project (PSR) as the PSR is said to affect the livelihood of thousands of fishermen, including those in Kedah and Perak.
The Penang government is under a political and moral obligation “to act with utmost transparency in the matter”, Penang MTUC said.
“The state cannot abdicate its accountability to the people of Penang on such a massive transportation plan until, and unless, it is prepared to have a public debate on this sensitive matter of concern,” Veeriah said in a statement.
He went on to urge the Penang government to take up the challenge for a comprehensive public discourse on the said issue. - FMT
