Fake RM122k nasi kandar ‘robbery’ causes massive jams

GEORGE TOWN: Police said today that two workers at a popular nasi kandar restaurant had made up a story about RM122,000 robbery which led to massive traffic disruption on the island because of police road blocks.
George Town police chief Soffian Santong said the money was later found hidden in a car after two workers had admitted making a false report.
Penang islanders had suffered traffic snarls in the afternoon as police mounted roadblocks on major roads, with only one lane on the Penang Bridge open to mainland-bound traffic as police.conducted checks.
Sofian said the two men will be taken to the magistrate’s court tomorrow for a remand order for investigations into perjury, he said. Earlier in the day, police received an emergency call claiming that two men on a motorcycle had taken some RM120,000, representing three days of restaurant takings while the money was being taken to the bank.
An auditor and a chief cashier had told police that the two men on a dark blue motorcycle, wearing police vests and balaclavas, had stopped them at a junction not far away from the shop, in Bayan Baru.
They had demanded to see the identity cards of the two workers, while one man, knife in hand, demanded a bag containing the cash.
In the police report, the workers said they were about to bank in RM122,555, the shop’s three-day revenue collection from Dec 6 to Dec 8. They said they transported the cash to the bank by motorcycle regularly.
Sofian said the men will be investigated for providing false information to a public servant, an offence which carries a penalty of six months’ jail or RM2,000 fine or both on conviction. - FMT
