Bukit Aman to question Latheefa

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Latheefa Koya will be called up to have her statements recorded over investigations into the nine sets of audio recording.

The recordings, which were played to the media during a recent press conference by the MACC, implicated several high-ranking officials, including former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador (pic) said they would leave no stone unturned in their investigations.

“We will be calling up the MACC chief commissioner to assist us in our investigations.

“There are a few questions that we need answers,” he told reporters in Bukit Aman yesterday.

The IGP said investigations would be carried out under Section 203(A) of the Penal Code for giving false information respecting an offence committed, Section 218 of the same Act in which a public servant framing an incorrect record or writing with intent to save someone from punishment or property from forfeiture, and Section 8 of the Official Secrets Act for revealing official secrets.

“I hope the public will be sympathetic towards us and understand our situation. Like I said, we have a long list of issues that burden us.

“For each case, we have a team working on investigations and it involved a lot of work and coordination,” he said.

Abdul Hamid said if there were any ambiguity on the laws in the course of their investigations, they would seek the assistance of the Attorney General.

“It is very important to establish where the audio clips came from, what type of recordings and its authenticity,” he said.

On how the enforcement agencies performed electronic surveillance, the top cop said there were provisions under the law for wire tapping involving cases such as kidnappings and organised crimes.

“I think it is also the same for the MACC,” he said.

On Jan 8, Latheefa alleged at a press conference that the audio conversations pointed to “serious power abuse, criminal conspiracy, obstruction of justice and compromising national security”.

She said these were made public after MACC investigations confirmed the “absolute authenticity” of the recordings.

The recordings were said to have taken place between Jan 5, 2016, and July 29, 2016.

The MACC said it received them anonymously just after New Year’s Day. - Star
