KUALA LUMPU— Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is proposing to lead a unity government and has invited lawmakers from across rival political parties to join, political sources said today, after his shock resignation as prime minister.
Dr Mahathir proposed the idea of a grand coalition to leaders of the major political parties he met this morning, including those from his recently collapsed coalition and the parties they defeated in the 2018 election, the sources said.
“In the absence of another candidate, it appears that Mahathir is poised to form the government,” one of four sources with direct knowledge of the matter said.
“There won’t be any political entity. We might be a government of no parties,” the source said.
A second source said, “The plan now is for a non-partisan unity government.”
The sources did not want to be identified as they were not authorised to speak to the media. Dr Mahathir’s office made no immediate comment. – MALAY MAIL
PH worth saving, says Kit Siang as pact implodes
KUALA LUMPUR: After the dissolution of the Pakatan Harapan-led federal government yesterday leaving its members in the docks, one of its major powerbrokers, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang stressed that the pact is “worth saving”.
He said this was despite the “extraordinary-developments” that had seen Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s resignation as prime minister and surprise reinstatement as interim PM.
“Pakatan Harapan government is not perfect, but we are set in this direction of a New Malaysia, and no other political group has made a similar commitment to continue in this direction in Malaysian nation-building.
“I do not agree with all the things done in the name of the Pakatan Harapan government in the past 20 months, but as I said to DAP leaders yesterday, so long as DAP leaders remain true, loyal and steadfast to their principles and objectives to make Malaysia a great nation, and do not go against their conscience, they must be prepared to be unpopular and even misunderstood,” Lim said in a blog post here today.
He said that Malaysians should make efforts against attempts by irresponsible political opportunists to topple the PH government.
“Because the alternative to the Malaysian Dream that we are trying to achieve of the country becoming a Tiger Economy and a world top-class nation is a Malaysian Nightmare of the reversion to a global kleptocracy, a failed and rogue state, and even worse, the advent of a kakistocracy where the worst, the most unscrupulous and the most unprincipled elements of society occupy the high offices of state in the nation.” NST
