At farewell, Gobind urges incoming minister to continue reform

Malaysiakini

Former communication and multimedia minister Gobind Singh Deo today urged the incoming minister to continue with the reform policies, including the establishment of the media council.
Attending the farewell luncheon at the ministry, he said the previous Pakatan Harapan government has agreed to promote media self-regulation.
"Regarding the establishment of the Malaysian Media Council, as long as there is no obstruction of the new government, it will be realised after almost five decades of this idea came to fruition in 1973," said Gobind in his speech.
When approached by the reporters later, he expressed his wish that the Perikatan Nasional government will continue the reform.
" [...] A committee was formed for the purpose of coming back to us with the recommendations, and the two months should expire soon.
"It is for the incoming minister to look at the proposal, and I hope it will come in reality because it is something that we have spoken for so long," Gobind added.
Harapan to discuss no-confidence vote
Meanwhile, Gobind also revealed that Pakatan Harapan leadership will discuss bringing up a motion of no-confidence in Parliament to challenge the new government.
"At the end of the day, we will put the motion which requires a vote of confidence. We were expecting it to be on March 9, but now it has been postponed to May 18. Of course, it can be done then as well.
"We will discuss this with the Harapan leadership in our next meeting," he said, adding that the date of the meeting has not been fixed yet.
Earlier, when speaking to hundreds of ministry members who attended the event, Gobind urged them to continue to serve the rakyat and fight against any form of corruption and abuse of power.
"Information is power. Therefore, having so much power, it's just as much responsibility that we have. I appeal to all the members of the ministry, please continue to work for the sake of Malaysians with a sense of responsibility.
"All civil servants are the fortifications that defend Malaysians from the political authorities who are corrupted and abuse their power," he said.
Suriani Ahmad, the Communications and Multimedia Ministry secretary-general, also praised Gobind's performance when he was leading the ministry.
“I am confident that although YB is no longer with the ministry, all initiatives planned and implemented by the ministry will continue for the benefit of the people,” she said in her speech.
Meanwhile, former deputy communications and multimedia minister Eddin Syazlee was absent at the farewell luncheon.
Eddin, who is also the Kuala Pilah MP, was reported to be en route to meet Dr Mahathir Mohamad at Yayasan Albukhary before Muhyiddin Yassin's appointment as prime minister.
But after the news broke that Muhyiddin would be sworn in the next day, Eddin was spotted at the future premier's home instead. - Mkini
