Food items for the needy stolen from public hall in Penang

Malaysiakini

A Penang PKR assemblyperson expressed shock and disappointment when food items reserved for the needy in the movement control order (MCO) were stolen from a public hall in Bukit Mertajam.
Machang Bubok's Lee Khai Loon said the theft was discovered about 1pm yesterday when his officer went to the hall located in Alma (near Maybank branch), about 30 metres from his office.
The officer found the building broken into, while items such as rice (59 packets), sardine cans (40), instant mee (30 packets), bee hoon (30 packets), eggs (10 trays), biscuits (30 packets) were missing, said Lee.
Also missing were three air conditioners (Hitachi and Singer brands) and their compressors, he added.
Lee's officer had lodged a police report in Bukit Mertajam yesterday at about 4.26pm.
"The food items stolen are estimated about RM2,000, while the three airconditioner units and their compressors cost about RM4,000," Lee told Malaysiakini.
Lee said the items were both contributed by the public and from the state government allocation.
On March 25, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow had announced an allocation of RN30,000 for each elected representatives in Penang to deal with the Covid-19 MCO, which was imposed from March 18 to April 14.
"There was no CCTV installed or guard on duty as it was a public building, while the CCTV from my office could not cover this area where the goods were stolen," Lee lamented.
"I put up the three units of air-conditioner so we can conduct Tuition Rakyat in a classroom style.
"I feel very sad and disappointed that such an incident had taken place, we hope the police will be able to bring the culprit to justice," Lee said.
"Those who need any assistance, can just inform us. We will do our best to assist you in this trying time," he added. - Mkini
