Man claims trial to posting offensive comments about Agong

KUALA LUMPUR: A 26-year-old man pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here to eight charges of posting offensive comments against Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah on Twitter last month.
Sufazrin Amin Ismail, who works as an e-hailing driver, was accused of posting eight tweets between March 23 and 25 with the intention of annoying others.
If found guilty under Section 233(1) of the Communications and Multimedia Act, he will face a maximum fine of RM50,000, a one-year jail term or both.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Shahrizzat Amadan asked the court to impose bail of RM10,000 for each of the charges, but Sufazrin pleaded for a lower amount saying he needed to support his family.
Sessions Court judge Emelia Kaswati Mohamad Khalid allowed Sufazrin to post a total of RM16,000 in bail for all eight charges and set May 12 for next mention so that he can appoint a lawyer.
The court also barred him from posting any similar tweets pending the disposal of his case.
Bukit Aman said yesterday that officers had arrested a man on April 3 for allegedly posting offensive comments against Sultan Abdullah on Twitter. The man was remanded from April 4 to 7. - FMT
