CORONAVIRUS | The Health Ministry said it has conducted an evaluation of several disinfection boxes, chambers, tunnels, booths, partition and gates and have come to the conclusion that there is no evidence their use is effective against Covid-19.
The equipment involves people standing in them and are sprayed with chemicals for 20 to 30 seconds to kill the virus.
"The outcome of the evaluation found there is no evidence to show that the equipment is effective in reducing Covid-19 infections.
"The 20-30 seconds (when an individual is sprayed with chemical) is not enough for the disinfecting process to be effective. The process also does not kill pathogens inside the body.
"Furthermore, the use of chemicals could harm the body's mucous membrane such as in the eyes and mouth," Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah told a press conference in Putrajaya today.
He said the Health Ministry's technology evaluation division conducted the evaluation based on several such types of equipment used in several countries as well as those used in Malaysia.
It added that the different models also used different kinds of chemicals.
"Based on the evaluation, the Health Ministry does not recommend the use of disinfection box/chamber/tunnel/booth/partition/gate as a means to reduce Covid-19 infections in humans," he said.
Noor Hisham also reiterated the importance of personal hygiene in fighting Covid-19.
He said people should regularly wash their hands with soap and ensure to keep a distance of at least one metre from other people. - Mkini
