SYMPTOMS - COVID-19

The majority of the cases of Covid-19 are mild but around 15% of the patients have gotten to be severe cases, and about 5% have become critically ill. Around 99% of the patients develop a high temperature, while more than half experience fatigue and dry cough. About a third experience muscle pain and breathing difficulties.

The first symptoms do not come right after a person has been infected. The incubation period for Covid-19 is between 2 days to 14 days.  However, some cases with an incubation period of up to 27 days have been reported. The World Health Organization believes that the longer incubation period could reflect a second exposure to the disease.

The initial symptom and the most common symptom is fever. Once the symptoms do appear, they are quite similar to pneumonia. However, the way the health of the Covid-19 patients deteriorate over time distinguishes it from pneumonia.

The timeline of the progress of the symptoms among the typical patients suffering from Covid-19 is as follows:-

Day 1
Patients run a fever. They may experience fatigue, muscle pain and a dry cough. A small minority of them may have had diarrhea or nausea one to two days before that.

Day 5
Patients have breathing difficulties - especially if they are older and/or have a pre-existing medical condition like diabetes or high blood pressure.

Day 7
This is how long it takes, on average, before patients are admitted to hospital.

Day 8
At this point, patients with severe cases develop acute respiratory distress syndrome ( ARDS ), an illness that occurs when fluid builds up in the lungs. ARDS is often fatal.

Day 10
If the patients have worsening symptoms, this is the time in the disease's progression when they are most likely to be admitted to the ICU. These patients have more severe abdominal pain and appetite loss than patients with milder symptoms. Only a small fraction of the patients die. The current fatality rate hovers at around 2%.

Day 17
On average, the patients who recover from this virus are discharged from the hospital after two-and-a-half weeks.
