Umno No 2 wants barbershops closed, says people can sport any style after pandemic

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | The people can sport any hairstyle they desire after the country manages to break the Covid-19 chain of infections and lower the number of cases, says Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan.
Mohamad took to Facebook this morning to air his view on the International Trade and Industry Ministry's (Miti) decision to allow barbershops, hair salons and several other industries to operate during the third phase of the movement control order (MCO).
He said the decision should be reviewed according to the advice of the Health Ministry as well as the public's reaction.

"Operation of businesses such as hair salons and laundry services should be postponed because these are not urgent needs, or non-essentials. Even Ramadan bazaars should not be given any slack (during the MCO).

"The public's reaction over the reopening of these non-essential services clearly shows that they disagree with it. Even many of the industry players have voiced their fear to operate during the pandemic," said Mohamad.
Mohamad stressed it is important for the government to enforce the restriction order strictly until the situation is stable.

The main priority of the government now is to ensure that public health would not be compromised in any circumstances, he added.

"All of us should play a role in contributing to the survival of our community. There is nothing more important than protecting lives and public safety.

"InsyaAllah (God willing), when this pandemic is over, we can sport whatever style we want, we can celebrate Hari Raya as much as we want, organise all sorts of bazaars including Ramadan bazaar, and visit our relatives and friends.

"Until then, it is our duty to break the chain of this pandemic and lower the rate of infections. So stay at home, practice good hygiene and social distancing!"

On Friday, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced the extension of the MCO to its third phase, from April 15 to April 28. It was initially slated for a two-week enforcement from March 18 to March 31, but was extended to April 14.
During the announcement, Muhyiddin said several economic sectors would be allowed to operate during the third phase, in a move to cushion the negative economic impact of Covid-19 to the country.
Hours after the announcement, International Trade and Industry Minister Azmin Ali came out with a press statement listing the industries. Besides hair salons and laundry services, Miti is also allowing hardware shops and optometrists to open for business.

However, the decision had since received negative feedback, including from the Malaysian Hairdressing Association which urged the government to reconsider it.

Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has also said that the government should postpone allowing barbershops and hair salons to operate. - Mkini
