BN hopes for united front to aid Muhyiddin in removal of speaker, deputy speaker

Malaysiakini

The BN leadership today rallied its MPs to put a united front in the Dewan Rakyat tomorrow to aid Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's in his bid to take control of the House's agenda.
Umno supreme council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (below) said parliamentarians were advised to attend the session and to stand united to support the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.
“We just (discussed) on Dewan Rakyat tomorrow, that we must unite, and all members of Parliament must attend to support the PN government,” he said when contacted after the meeting.
He said the leaders discussed the motions filed by Muhyiddin to have the speaker and deputy speaker of the House replaced with PN's own choice.
“God willing, the speaker and deputy will be changed tomorrow.”
The Bersatu president and acting chairperson had filed the motions last month to replace Dewan Yang di-Pertua Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof (below, right) and his deputy Nga Kor Ming from DAP.
The motions, which have been accepted by Ariff for debate, will be the first motions to be tabled when the august House reconvenes tomorrow. The Dewan Rakyat session is slated to run from July 13 to Aug 27.
The premier reportedly intends to appoint former Election Commission (EC) chief Azhar Azizan Harun as the new speaker and BN Pengerang MP Azalina Othman Said as deputy speaker.
Deputy speaker Mohd Rashid Hasnon, who is the Batu Pahat MP aligned with the PN government, is not affected by the motions.
Meanwhile, BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi when met by reporters after a meeting between PN MPs in Putrajaya today, said they have all come to an agreement to support Muhyiddin's proposed motions.
"We have agreed to support all motions that will be proposed by the PM.
"As we know, there will be a big decision that needs to be made tomorrow regarding the replacement of (the Parliament) speaker with a candidate being proposed by the government.
"So, we will give 100 percent of our support," he said.
Tomorrow will be the first full Parliament sitting since the change in government and the movement control order (MCO) to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.
The previous sitting in May was controversially limited to just one day in light of coronavirus fears, to hear the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's address. Debates and questions by lawmakers were not permitted at that time.
Among other MPs who attended today’s BN meeting at Menara Umno in Kuala Lumpur were former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, Azalina, Shahidan Kassim, and Halimah Sadique.
The BN MPs later proceeded to Putrajaya for a separate meeting with their PN partners comprising Bersatu, PAS, GPS, PBS, STAR and former PKR deputy president Azmin Ali's G10. - Mkini
