Johor DAP head Liew Chin Tong, in a briefing for party members in Bakri and Muar, urged them to help return former Bersatu Youth chief Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman (above) as the Muar MP during the next general election even though he is not from the same party as them.
"I also told Bakri and Muar DAP grassroots leaders that in the event of a snap election, while fighting to secure our Bakri (parliamentary) and Bentayan (state) seats, we must also do everything within our ability to ensure that our closest ally Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman is returned as MP for Muar," he said in a statement on Facebook.
Liew said he also conveyed to party members there to try their best "to cause the defeat of Muhyiddin Yassin in Pagoh, however difficult it may sound at this stage".
Bakri, Muar and Pagoh are all within the general northern area of Johor. Bentayan is a state seat within Bakri. Both have been contested by DAP.
Muar town is divided into two parliamentary constituencies, namely Bakri, held by DAP's Yeo Bee Yin, and Muar, held by Syed Saddiq. Pagoh, held by Muhyiddin, is adjacent to Muar town.
Syed Saddiq is part of a group of rebel Bersatu MPs led by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
They have all been sacked from Bersatu for opposing Muhyiddin's government.
The Pakatan Harapan government collapsed in late February after Muhyiddin pulled Bersatu out and formed a new coalition with PKR defectors, BN, PAS, GPS, PBS and Star.
Muhyiddin was sworn in as the new prime minister after his mentor-turned-rival Mahathir refused to lead the new Perikatan Nasional coalition, saying he was adamantly opposed to working with Umno.
Liew, in his briefing to the DAP grassroots members, also emphasised the importance of DAP taking a multiracial approach and not only focusing on its Chinese base. - Mkini
