Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has challenged Amanah communications director Khalid Samad to reveal the names of 30 Umno MPs allegedly supporting PKR president Anwar Ibrahim's bid to form a new government.
Responding to Khalid's claim that Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had promised the support of 30 Umno MPs, Asyraf dared the Shah Alam MP to disclose their identities.
"It looks like Abang Lid can't wait to be a minister once again and is desperate enough to take part in this act. If it is really true there are 30 Umno MPs supporting Anwar, reveal their names," said Asyraf in a statement.
"Even with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Anwar put up an act by only presenting the number and not names, so what more with the rakyat," Asyraf further claimed.
Asyraf also reiterated that there has been no change to an Umno supreme council decision to not support Anwar or DAP. "Do all of you want the Harapan government to return to power?" he posed.
He was responding to Khalid's reported remarks during an interview with online portal Jom Channel last night, claiming that Zahid had communicated the support of 30 Umno MPs for Anwar in a recent letter handed to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
"I am made to understand, other than letters from (Amanah president) Mohamad Sabu, (DAP secretary-general) Lim Guan Eng, Anwar also presented a letter by Zahid, which stated that 30 MPs from Umno, if I'm not mistaken, supported Anwar," said Khalid.
According to Khalid, Zahid's letter also contained a list of Umno MPs who backed Anwar.
Taking to Twitter, Khalid, however, admitted that the "30 Umno MPs" figure was not mentioned to him by any party and it was merely based on his personal estimation.
'MCA not backing Anwar'
Separately, Astro Awani reported MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon as saying that the party's MPs would not be supporting Anwar even if the latter proves to have the numbers to form a new government.
"MCA's Political Bureau has discussed and decided that even if Anwar obtained enough support, MCA will not support or be with him to form a new government.
"That is the decision taken by the MCA," said Chong, adding that the party's focus was to support the current government's efforts to curb the Covid-19 outbreak and restart the economy.
"Regarding the vote of no confidence (against Muhyiddin), we have not discussed the matter and have yet to raise it at the Political Bureau," he added.
Anwar was granted an audience by the Agong on Tuesday during which the former claimed he had provided evidence that he commanded the support of more than 120 MPs.
However, Istana Negara subsequently said that Anwar had not provided a list of the MPs to back his claim.
So far, Anwar has kept mum on the composition of his numbers but stressed that his team was "inclusive".
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah has since summoned various top party leaders for audiences at the National Palace but this process has been postponed as the federal capital and Selangor have been placed under a conditional movement control order to curb the spread of Covid-19. - Mkini
