No point politicking while rakyat suffer, says Muhyiddin

PAGOH: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says there is no use politicking if it does not benefit the lives of the rakyat, especially during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

As the prime minister, he said, it would be a waste of time if he was busy with politics simply for the sake of defending his position while the people suffer from the effects of the pandemic.

“Who wants to be prime minister, who wants to be deputy prime minister, who wants to be division chief — the people are already sick of this. That’s why I avoid making any political statements,” he said while on a constituency visit here. Muhyiddin is the MP for Pagoh.

“The people are complaining about their difficulties. There’s not enough food, little income, some have been retrenched, businesses are not doing well. This is the reality now.

“That’s why I really agree with the advice of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, for us to forget about politics and focus on defending and helping the people,” he said in a speech at a gathering with community leaders here.

Muhyiddin said he had refrained from commenting on political issues since becoming prime minister as he wanted to focus on helping the people while the nation faced the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said the rakyat would be angry with him if he harped on politics when the people were busy with the issues brought about by the pandemic.

He also said the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore high-speed rail project is expected to begin construction soon, with one of its stops set to be in Pagoh.

He said a free economic zone will be developed by Sime Darby Properties in Pagoh which would provide tax incentives for manufacturers. “I’m looking for a way to bring in many major foreign companies to Pagoh. If this can be done, employment, business and economic opportunities in Pagoh will be guaranteed,” he said. - FMT
