Wee lodges report over viral message alleging corruption in ministry

Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong has lodged a police report over a WhatsApp message claiming to expose corruption scandals in the country, which has gone viral.

The MCA president said he believed that a police report was necessary as the message targeted multiple government agencies, including the MACC.

“As soon as I received the WhatsApp message, I immediately headed to the Cheras police station to lodge a report.

“I want the police to investigate this false allegation making the rounds on WhatsApp as of late,” Wee said on his Facebook page this afternoon.

Titled “Corruption Conspiracy and Scandal in Malaysia”, the message alleged that the Transport Ministry and the Marine Department were implicated in a fuel syndicate covering coastal areas.

“As transport minister, I will respect the investigative process by the MACC into a senior officer of the Marine Department and several others involved in obtaining certain exemptions to use 'single hull, single bottom' and/or 'single hull, double bottom' vessels to transport heavy grade fuel without the minister's approval.

“It has long been the practice of the International Maritime Organisation to only allow the use of 'double hull, double bottom' vessels to carry heavy grade fuels. The Marine Department even published a notice for this policy back in 2015,” Wee explained.

The message originally claimed to be from a “Muhammad Fauzan Jamil” but on Thursday, the MACC issued a statement saying that his name and MyKad were misused to write the WhatsApp message.

“The message is fake, as well as the email used. Following the matter, he (Fauzan) will file a police report,” the MACC said. - Mkini
