Water dispute: Penang wants official communication from Kedah

Amidst a water-supply war, the Penang state administration today said it would only look into negotiating with Kedah if there is official government-to-government communication.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow reportedly told the media this morning that so far, there has not been any such communication, except for a letter from the Kedah Water Corporation to the Penang Water Supply Corporation three months ago.

“We have replied to the letter sent to the Penang Water Supply Corporation that Penang will not pay any charges for raw water drawn from Sungai Muda.

“Even when the federal minister recognised our right to draw water and volunteered to act as a mediator, it was refused by Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.

“We will look into the issue if there is an official communication from the Kedah government,” Chow was quoted as saying by The Star.

He spoke to the media after a groundbreaking ceremony of the Ideal residential project in Bukit Gelugor.

Penang and Kedah were in a tussle over the supply of water from Sungai Muda in Kedah.

The PAS-led Kedah state government is demanding that Penang pays them for water that it gets from Sungai Muda.

However, Penang insisted it is within its rights to draw raw water from its side of the river. - Mkini
