Annuar: Zahid gave order not to register Muafakat Nasional

Ousted BN secretary-general Annuar Musa claimed PAS proposed that the Muafakat Nasional coalition comprising the Islamist party and Umno be registered but Umno refused.

This differed from what PAS vice-president Mohd Amar Abdullah had alleged.

Amar had claimed that there was a problem in registering the coalition with the Registrar of Societies (RoS) as the name was registered by another party.

According to Annuar, the problem in registering Muafakat Nasional had nothing to do with that but it was Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who ordered the Umno leadership not to register the coalition.

"Nothing to do with (what Amar alleged) at all," he said.

Annuar explained that the decision had changed several times since both parties signed the coalition charter in September last year.

He said that in the early stage, there was no plan to register Muafakat Nasional but Umno changed its mind and wanted to register the coalition.

"When PAS joined the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, it (Umno) thought that there is no reason to register Muafakat Nasional.

"Then it changed again. When PN was registered, (it was decided that) Muafakat Nasional should be registered as well. So, I was ordered to draft the constitution and so on.

"In November (last year), when we were discussing the registration (in a meeting), the president (Zahid) ordered us to bring a motion that Muafakat Nasional will not be registered," he told a press conference in Putrajaya today.

He further explained that since Umno decided to contest the election under BN, the registration of Muafakat Nasional was deemed irrelevant.

He claimed it was PAS that wanted the registration of the coalition to proceed.

"Honestly speaking, at the last meeting with PAS, it had proposed that the coalition be registered but Umno refused," he said.

Last month, Amar said if both parties want to proceed with the registration of Muafakat, they would have to change the name.

The coalition, however, would continue to use Muafakat Nasional without it being registered. - Mkini
