KOTA KINABALU: The parking lot adjacent to the Kinabalu National Park collapsed in a landslide at the Kundasang highlands in Ranau, about 100km from here, early today.
The public car park at Km20 Jalan Ranau-Tamparuli is believed to have collapsed following incessant rain over the past week.
Ranau police chief Sammy Newton said they were alerted at 7.15am.
He said the affected area was 150m by 100m in size, and the earth fell 200m down into a ravine.
Sammy said the two-lane main road next to the car park is still passable to all types of vehicles. The road connects the west coast with the Sandakan district in the east.
“It has not affected the traffic there. The landslide also did not affect any village or settlement. No fatality has been reported,” he said, adding losses are still being estimated.
Sammy said the Sabah Parks authorities had earlier cordoned off the car park after cracks appeared on the road surface.
Deputy chief minister Bung Moktar Radin said he had instructed the state Public Works Department to take immediate action to repair infrastructure damaged by floods or heavy rain.
“But the public must understand that incidents have been reported at many locations. So, remedial work will take time,” he said to FMT. - FMT
