Floods: Situation worsens in Johor as 300 more victims land in shelters

JOHOR BARU: The flood situation in the state has worsened with an increase of more than 300 people in temporary shelters statewide.

Johor health and environment committee chairman R. Vidyananthan said that as of 8pm, the number of victims sent to the temporary shelters has gone up to 1,604 from 1,251 previously.

"More than half of the victims are in Kota Tinggi, which has 1,084 victims, followed by Johor Baru with 375 victims, Segamat with 94 victims and Mersing with 51 victims.

"One more temporary shelters have been opened, bringing the total number of temporary shelters to 28 in the four affected districts," he said in a statement here on Sunday (Jan 10).

He added that three roads have been closed due to the floods, which includes, Jalan Haji Suhud in Johor Baru, Jalan Tanah Abang in Mersing and Jalan Felda Semenchu in Kota Tinggi.

Vidyananthan also reminded those in the temporary shelters to abide by the standard operating procedures (SOP) under the conditional movement control order (MCO), including putting on face masks and maintaining social distancing. - Star
