KOTA BARU: Kelantan recorded 108 rape cases last year, an increase of 34 cases compared 74 in 2019, police said.
Expressing concern, state police chief Datuk Shafien Mamat said the cases also involved underage couples.
"The increase in rape cases in the state ia really worrying the police as not only does it involve young couples but also family members of the victims.
"The immoral activities were done by victims' close relatives secretly without the knowledge of others in the family," he added.
Shafien said some of the victims have lodged police reports but many refused to do so due family concerns.
He said that even those with religious education were also involved.
"Even those with strong religious backgrounds commit these immoral activities.
"Police investigations also revealed that a majority of the youths involved in rape cases were from medium income groups," he added.
Shafien advised parents to regularly monitor their children's activities to prevent them from getting involved in the criminal act. - NST
