Quarrying blamed for killing scenic waterfall

Tanjung Batu Teluk Sera Waterfall in Segari, Pantai Remis, has been 90% destroyed, says an environmental group.

IPOH: Environmental destruction at the Segari Melintang Forest Reserve in Manjung is believed to have been caused by quarrying at the site, environment minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said today.

An initial investigation by the Perak environmental department found there were six violations of the environmental conditions involving earthworks which were carried out without mitigation measures to prevent pollution, he said.

Tuan Ibrahim said the department was finalising the investigation paper and calling the relevant parties for further action. The site had been cordoned off.

On Jan 17, Persatuan Aktivis Sahabat Alam took media crews to view the site and said the Tanjung Batu Teluk Sera Waterfall in Segari, Pantai Remis, located in the forest reserve and a tourist attraction, was now almost 90% destroyed as a result of quarrying since last year.

The state government later ordered that any activities, including quarrying, at the waterfall area should be suspended while waiting for the result of the investigation into the claim made.

Tuan Ibrahim said the developer also failed to inform the environment department that work had started as required by the environmental impact assessment (EIA) approval conditions.

“Investigations also found that the failure to manage wood and soil waste (overburden) well at the quarry site caused the waste to enter the river,” he said in a statement today.

Tuan Ibrahim reminded all project movers, contractors and parties involved to comply with all EIA approval requirements so as to prevent the incident from recurring and prevent pollution following development activities. - FMT
