Sarawak leaders slam Dr M for politicking during Covid-19

James Masing says all citizens must continue to stand behind Muhyiddin Yassin to contain the pandemic.

KUCHING: Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has come under fire from two Sarawak leaders for urging Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to step down in the midst of efforts to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.

PRS president James Masing said all MPs should put aside their political differences and join hands to curb the spread of the virus, instead of destabilising the government.

“It is embarrassing that as a former prime minister, (Mahathir) was asking Muhyiddin to resign when the country is trying to contain the virus,” Masing said in reference to Mahathir’s statement on Thursday that “the best advice I can give now is that you don’t look strong enough, just resign.”

Muhyiddin has come under pressure from Umno politicians who have threatened to withdraw support for his government.

Masing, who is a deputy chief minister, said that although not all the prime minister’s decisions and efforts are favourable to the ruling Sarawak coalition, as loyal Malaysians we continue to stand behind him to contain the pandemic”.

SUPP Youth chief Michael Tiang said some senior politicians in Peninsular Malaysia had been irresponsible with their statements, disregarding the battle against the pandemic and instead continuing to put their focus on political sparring against one another.

“Isn’t Mahathir, a two-time former prime minister, aware that Muhyiddin’s top priority now is to ensure the country is able to weather through the pandemic and that nothing is more important than this responsibility in the administration?,” he said.

“The prime minister has an important mission to accomplish rather than to resign just because there are some political troubles,” he added. - Mkini
