Senior citizen's death believed to be Covid-19-related suicide

A senior citizen was found dead at his house in Bandar Putra Permai, Seri Kembangan yesterday after he was believed to have committed suicide due to depression caused by his testing positive for Covid-19.

According to Serdang District Criminal Investigation Division chief Mohd Akmalrizal Radzi, the 66-year-old man underwent two Covid-19 screening tests on Jan 7 and 18, and both were found to be positive.

"The victim on Jan 22 had asked his wife to go to the bank to transfer RM40,000 for his Covid-19 medical treatment.

"According to his wife, the victim often complained of pain and was in a depressed state after testing positive for Covid-19.

"The victim also often told his wife it was better to die than to be sick like this," the authorities said in a statement.

Mohd Akmalrizal said initial investigations at the scene also did not reveal any criminal element and is believed to have been a suicide case.

"The case is classified as sudden death (SDR) pending further reports," he added.
